“Wall-Raising” celebrates brand new Habitat For Humanity neighborhood

Thrivent Builds helps construct the first home in Abigail Springs

A dedicated group of volunteers and Habitat for Humanity supporters gathered early Saturday morning to officially kick-off new construction at Abigail Springs in Taylors. The “Wall-Raising” marked the beginning of work on the first home in the neighborhood and the second home funded and constructed through Habitat for Humanity International partner – Thrivent Builds. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will build nearly 200 Habitat homes across the country this year. Eight Lutheran churches in Greenville County provide volunteers for Thrivent Builds, donating an estimated 330 man-days of work on the Abigail Springs home.

“Thrivent Builds is very special to Habitat,” said Monroe Free, President of Habitat for Humanity Greenville County. “Everyone understands the fiscal constraints we are all under and having such a wonderful partner commit to building multiple homes is a tremendous blessing to everyone at Habitat, especially future homeowners.”

Abigail Springs is comprised of 32 developed building lots off Edwards Street in Taylors.  The property was discovered when a Habitat home was built one block away during the summer of 2009.  The property had been on the market for some time with a significantly reduced price, making it possible for Habitat to purchase multiple lots.  The Thrivent Builds – Habitat Greenville project is building one of the first two Habitat homes planned in Abigail Springs.

"Habitat has opened up unprecedented opportunities for me to cross the chasm that separates those of us who are free, safe, well fed and housed, financially secure and influential enough to shape our own destiny from our neighbors who enjoy few, if any, of these advantages"
