On May 12, Upstate Publix associates helped us raise the walls on a home for the Hernandez family, with partner, Publix Supermarket Charities. Publix has pledged $4 million in 2016 to fund the construction of new homes across the Southeast. Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County is one of 40 Habitat affiliates to receive funding for a full home build. During the wall-raising ceremony, volunteers had the opportunity to hear from the homeowner as well as write encouraging messages on the studs that will form the framework of the home.
Simonita Hernandez works as a CNA and holds a second job with a hospice agency. She first applied for homeownership in 2011, but shortly thereafter, her youngest son was diagnosed with leukemia. After successful treatment, and remission of her son’s illness in 2014, she reapplied to Habitat and was accepted. As a participant in the Habitat homeowner program, Simonita will complete 20 hours of classes preparing her for homeownership, and performed more than 200 hours of sweat equity working on Habitat homes. She will pay an affordable mortgage for her family's home.
Monroe Free, President and CEO of Habitat Greenville, shared, “Not only does Publix provide great service to its customers, but it also serves the community. We are deeply grateful to Publix for this support, which will enable Habitat Greenville to provide the life-changing benefits of affordable homeownership to the Hernandez family."
